Today, we will discuss how people who are new to British Columbia can get health insurance, which is called the Medical Services Plan (MSP). We will also provide information about the healthcare system in British Columbia and guide you on how to use it when you move to the province.

Eligibility for British Columbia’s Medical Services Plan (MSP)

  • As soon as you arrive in British Columbia, apply for your health card with the Medical Services Plan (MSP).
  • You don't have to wait; it's encouraged to apply right away, and the waiting period for coverage will be sorted out during the application process.
  • Anyone living in British Columbia can apply for healthcare.
  • You need to be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident and live in British Columbia for most of the year (6 to 7 months each year).

In addition to the aforementioned criteria, the following groups of individuals may also qualify for healthcare in British Columbia:

  • Dependents of those who meet the requirements mentioned earlier.
  • Students with valid study permits.
  • Individuals with Working Holiday work permits.
  • Certain holders of study or work permits admitted to Canada under the federal Immigration and Refugee Protection Act.
